Reds Announce 17th Annual Reunion Calendar of Events

Providence, RI (6/20/2017): The Rhode Island Reds Heritage Society today announced the event calendar for its 17th annual reunion the weekend of August 4, 5 and 6.

Former Reds players and other hockey luminaries will be honored during the three-day celebration.

Friday, August 4, 7 p.m.: “Meet and Greet” at Hampton Inn & Suites (reunion headquarters). By invitation only to players, sponsors, award recipients and society directors. Food and spirits will be served. Boston sports comedian Mike Donovan will entertain and kick off the reunion’s weekend theme, “Look Back & Laugh.”

Saturday, August 5, 6 p.m.: Cocktails, dinner, dancing, and entertainment will be presented at 12 Acres banquet facility in North Smithfield, a great place to gab and catch up with former teammates, non-teammates, fans and friends. Dinner choices are steak, lobster or chicken. Appetizers will include chowder (chow-da) and clam cakes. Open to the public at $45 P/P. Prior reservations are required. Sunday, August 6, 12 noon: 17th annual reunion celebration will be in the historic Carousel Building at beautiful Goddard State Park in Warwick. Bryan Berard, former Mt. St. Charles star who was #1 NHL draft pick in 1995, will be an honored guest along with former Reds’ stars and other hockey notables. The event, as usual, will present lively music and delicious cookout food. It will be there that Orland Kurtenbach former Reds’ star who made it big in the NHL, will be presented with the 2017-18 “Tops Award” for his dedication and support of hockey and public service to the greater community. Other major presentations will include:

  • “Sage Family Service Award” to Mark Divver, hockey writer for the Providence Journal
  • “Fan of the Year Award” to Len Tessier, a fellow Society director who passed away last winter
  • “R. I. Native-born Hockey Achievement Award” to Joe Cavanagh, three-time All-American collegiate center at Harvard University
  • “Six Unsung Hero Awards” (boys and girls) of Rhode Island interscholastic hockey
