R. I. Reds Heritage Society Announces Player Roster for 11th Reunion

Providence, RI (7/27/2011): Led by Hockey Hall of Fame members Johnny Bower and Ferny Flaman, the R, I, Reds Heritage Society has announced that it expects 34 ex-Reds and other pro hockey greats to attend its 11th annual reunion weekend, August 5-7.

Bower will be joined by Ray Ross, Bob Robertson, Bruce Cline and Bill McCreary – all teammates on the Reds last Calder Cup championship team of 1955-56. That team recently was named by the Society for International Hockey Research (SIHR) as having the greatest season in minor league hockey history. SIHR is a 500-member worldwide organization of hockey researchers, historians and writers.

Flaman will be joined by his former NHL teammates and players he once coached in the AHL. Headed by Gil Mayer, the great AHL Hall of Fame goaltender, they include Don McKenney, Fleming Mackell, Jim Morrison, Ian Anderson, Stan Baluik, Bob Beckett, Ross Brooks, Serge Boudreault, Ray Clearwater, Buzz Deschamps, Bobby Leduc, Ed MacQueen, Wayne Muloin, Dan Poliziani and George Ranieri.

Other former Reds attending will be Gary Collins, Howie Menard, Lt. Col. Eddie Staniowski, former goalie and a veteran of four assignments to Afghanistan; and Danny Lewicki, who at 18-years old was traded by the Reds to Toronto in 1948 for an experienced NHL/AHL replacement, Jackie Hamilton, and $35,000.

At the top of the list of locals is Chuck Scherza, a Pawtucket resident who skated 10 years with the Reds. Don and Tom Mellor will share the spotlight, too. Don, the dad, once played for the Boston Olympics (EHL) and son Tom with the Detroit Red Wings. Other local ex-pro hockey stars expected to show are Bennett brothers – Bill, Harvey, Jr., and Jim – and Eddie Lee and Rich Pumple.

Saturday, (August 6) the group will be guests at a PawSox buffet/game starting at 4:00 PM at McCoy Stadium. That event is now sold out. Sunday (August7) the players and their families will attend the traditional reunion barbecue at Goddard State Park. Of the 300 ticket maximum only 22 tickets remain and no tickets will be sold at the gate.
