R. I. Reds Society Night at the PawSox Set for August 6

Providence, RI (5/23/2011): The region’s sports fans will have a chance to celebrate a winter sport while enjoying summer’s game during the R. I. Reds Heritage Society’s 11th annual reunion weekend August 5-7.

That dual opportunity will be at the third annual “R.I. Reds Night at the PawSox” on Saturday, August 6, when the local International League team hosts the Buffalo Bisons at Pawtucket’s McCoy Stadium.

Game time at 6:05 p.m. will be preceded by a special barbeque at 4:00 p.m. and some unique pre-game ceremonies. Reds tickets – open to the public - cover all the evening’s activities at $35 per person. An exclusive tent area is reserved for the Reds’ party. More information and ticket instructions are on the www.rireds.org web site.

A highlight will be the ceremonial first-pitch to be tossed by Chuck Scherza, one of the most popular hockey players ever to wear a R.I. Reds uniform. Scherza played 10 seasons with the Red and also with the NHL’s Boston Bruins and New York Rangers, then had a long career as linesman and referee. A native of Manitoba, Canada, he has lived in Pawtucket for many years.

Accompanying Scherza to the McCoy Stadium pitchers mound will be a group of former Reds players who have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. At the first two previous Reds Night events, Hall of Famers Milt Schmidt and Ferny Flaman handled the first-pitch honors. During the PawSox-Bisons game, some of the Reds players will be signing autographs free for fans. Details of the signings will be announced at game time.

In addition, all former Reds players at the game will be introduced to the McCoy Stadium crowd. Buster Clegg, president of the sponsoring R.I. Reds Heritage Society, said 30 or more players are expected to be present during its 11th annual reunion weekend.

The three-day event will culminate with special awards ceremonies and a cookout on August 7 at Goddard Park in Warwick. Cost of that event is also $35 per person.

The R.I. Reds Heritage Society was founded as a non-profit organization eleven years ago to restore and preserve the history of former Reds franchise and its 51 seasons in Providence, and to support the game of hockey in Rhode Island.
